Nitrogen instead of Air in your Tyres
Having your tyres filled with Nitrogen rather than Air is not a new idea. NASCAR drivers, Big Trucks, Planes and even the Space
Shuttle use Nitrogen in their tyres for safety reasons, you can too.
A good reason to think about stopping putting air in your tyres is that the compressed air you find at petrol stations has a high
concentration of water vapour. Compressing air concentrates the water in it and there is a good chance there is water vapour in
your tyres. Water vapour absorbs and holds heat, which increases the risk of your tyres having a blow out.
We at Oakdene Autos believe that there are several major advantages to filling your tyres with Nitrogen such as:
Better air pressure retention
Because Nitrogen molecules are larger than Air molecules, the pressure doesn't seep out
through the tyre walls like Air does, so tyres remain fully inflated for longer. While both nitrogen
and oxygen can migrate through rubber, nitrogen does it much slower. It might take six months to
lose a couple of pounds of nitrogen, compared to less than a month with wet compressed air.
Improved fuel economy
Filling your tyres with nitrogen rather than air will improve your mpg. As Nitrogen dissipates heat
faster than air, and heat causes rolling resistance. Also tyres that are not properly inflated have a
higher rolling resistance and make a car's engine work harder, burning more fuel and causing
more pollution. "Maintaining tyre pressure can boost fuel economy by as much as 6 percent."
Tyres last longer
Filling your tyres with pure Nitrogen makes tyres run cooler, which will reduce tyre failure. It also
prevents oxidation, which can cause tread separation and belt failure. Since Nitrogen doesn't carry moisture, it won't cause a build
up of rust on the inside of rims or valve stems.
Slower chemical aging
Filling a tyre with Nitrogen also significantly slows the chemical aging process of the tyre's rubber components.
Where can I get nitrogen for my tyres?
You will very soon be able to have Nitrogen for your tyres right here at Oakdene Autos. We are in the process of upgrading and
installing new equipment at our premises at cranes farm road. Although we do not have a specific date as to when this service will
be available, rest assured we are working on it. Please keep an eye on the website for an update, or call the office.
Safety Note
Whether you use air or nitrogen to inflate your tyres, Oakdene Autos recommend tyres be checked at least monthly and rotated
every 5,000 - 6,000 miles.
